PU CNC Machining

PU material, or Polyurethane material, is a versatile polymer material with excellent elasticity and wear resistance, chemical resistance, abrasion resistance, and excellent insulation.

Polyurethane is available in a range of hardness levels, often referred to as durometer hardness. For polyurethane, the Shore A and Shore D scales are commonly used. Polyurethane products with a lower Shore A durometer value are softer and more flexible with application wheels, seals, and flexible foams. Polyurethane products with a higher Shore D durometer value are harder and more rigid with application in industrial wheels, rollers, and structural components.

Generally speaking, PU is widely used in the manufacture of seals, gaskets, vibration dampers, tires, and suspension systems. Automotive industry applications include car seats, steering wheels, vehicle body seals, and suspension systems.

PU Machining Tips

  1. Elastic memory is the elastic dimensional recovery that takes place in polyurethane throughout and after the machining process. Machining devices have to give enough clearance to make up for this flexibility.
  2. There are several various other variables that add to a precisely machined result. Correct maker tool geometry, feed and speed rates, and use of coolants are needed to stay clear of gumming up, inadequate surfaces, and non-conforming dimensional control caused by excess warmth. Cool water-soluble machining oils or other light machining lubricating substances are an ideal choice for polyurethanes to ensure far better results.
  3. Before machining polyurethanes, fixturing is exceptionally vital to keep in consideration.

Cost-saving Design Tips

To reduce costs, limit part setups numbers, inspection dimensions or tight tolerances numbers, and deep pockets with small radii.

PU CNC Machining FAQs

Yes, but it is no easy to machine PU. Elastic memory is the elastic dimensional recovery that occurs in polyurethane during and after the machining process. Machining tools must provide enough clearance to compensate for this elasticity.
